Fire protection work asks a lot of contractors. Products must be tested to recognized standards, materials need to arrive when the project requires them, and on-site questions need timely answers. Choosing the right fire-resistant coatings manufacturer is about more than the product in the can. It is also about the technical guidance, product documentation, and support that come with it.

Firefree Coatings, Inc. is a California-based manufacturer of intumescent fire-resistant coatings and fire-retardant paint solutions for building projects. Through the Firefree Contractor Program, the company supports professional contractors looking for fire protection coatings suited to their project requirements.

The Firefree Contractor Program offers six key benefits designed to help contractors evaluate coating options, access relevant technical resources, and plan fire-resistant coating projects with greater confidence.

1. Third-Party Certified & Accredited

Fire-rated projects depend on documented performance. Firefree products are tested to standards including ASTM E119, ASTM E84, ASTM E1354, ASTM E662, FM 4470 and FM 4975.

Firefree 88® is:

  • UL Classified (R14654) on OSB and Douglas fir

  • FM Approved per FM 4975

  • ICC Listed (ESR 4271)

Firefree Class A is tested to ASTM E84, including the 30-minute extended test. This third-party testing gives contractors clear documentation to reference when a project is specified and reviewed.

2. Supply & Lead Time Priority

Project schedules don’t wait for materials. Contractors in the Firefree program receive priority on supply and lead times. To plan orders around your project timeline, speak directly with the Firefree team.

3. Technical & Engineering Support

Questions about substrates, assemblies or application details can come up at any stage of a project. Firefree’s technical and engineering team is available to help contractors work through them.

Firefree’s product pages also include technical specifications and safety data sheets, and the Firefree 88 page includes assemblies and drawings. Contractors can review these before and during a project.

4. Quality Products

Firefree Coatings, Inc. offers three products for different applications:

  • Firefree 88®: an intumescent fire-resistant coating for walls, floors, ceilings, roof/ceiling and floor/ceiling assemblies, and individual structural members. It can be used on structural steel, wood, concrete and gypsum board.

  • Firefree Class A: a fire-retardant paint for wood, including OSB, plywood, Douglas fir, dimensional lumber, wood paneling and sheathing. For exterior use, it is paired with Firefree Exterior Topcoat.

  • Firefree Exterior System: a two-step system with a base coat, a top coat and an optional sealer, for exterior wood, siding, eaves and decks.

Firefree coatings are applied in multiple layers using a brush, roller or spray equipment. The number of layers and the thickness depend on the substrate and the level of protection needed.

5. Product Training & Preferred Contractor’s List

Firefree states that its coatings must be applied by a qualified professional. Firefree provides product training so contractors can apply its coatings according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Contractors in the program can also be added to the Preferred Contractor’s List. Property owners contact Firefree for help finding contractors near them who specialize in its coatings, and Firefree’s technical team connects them with approved contractors in their area.

6. 100% Customer Care

From the first enquiry to project completion, Firefree’s team stays available to contractors. Questions can be sent through the contact form or by email, and the team will be in touch.
