The Habit That Started This List

A friend texted me recently, mid scroll through four different travel apps, asking if there was a faster way to do what she was doing. She'd been at it for nearly an hour and still hadn't booked anything. I sent her five things to check, in order, and she had a flight booked in under five minutes. Here's that same list.
Check One Platform's Fare Calendar First
Before comparing across five apps, open one, MakeMyTrip works well for this, and check the fare calendar for a spread of nearby dates instead of searching a single fixed date. This single step usually tells you more about where the real savings are than an hour of scrolling across multiple platforms ever does.
Lean Toward A Midweek Date If You Can
Tuesday and Wednesday departures consistently run cheaper than Friday through Sunday on most domestic routes, since that's when leisure and weekend demand peaks. If your travel has any flexibility at all, this one shift does more for the price than most other tips combined.
Book Inside The Right Window, Not Just Early
Three to eight weeks before departure tends to be the sweet spot for most routes. Booking six months out doesn't guarantee a lower fare, and booking inside the final week almost always costs more. The exception is peak season travel like Diwali or Christmas, where eight to twelve weeks out works better since prices climb instead of settling into a dip.
Compare The Final Price, Not The Base Fare
A lot of the time wasted scrolling comes from comparing base fares across platforms that don't actually reflect what you'll pay. Get to the payment page on your top one or two options and compare the real total, including convenience fees, before deciding anything is actually cheaper elsewhere.
Check Bank Offers Before Opening A Second App
If the platform you're already on shows a solid bank offer at checkout, that might be reason enough to stop comparing. MakeMyTrip in particular tends to have decent offers worth checking before deciding a second platform is necessary at all.
The Actual Time Saver
None of this requires more research, it requires less of it done in the right order. Fare calendar first, midweek date if possible, right booking window, final price comparison, bank offer check. Five steps, most of them under a minute each, instead of an hour of scrolling that usually lands on the same answer anyway.
My friend's version of this took under five minutes once she stopped treating every booking like a research project. That's really the whole point.
