IMARC Group, a leading global market research and management consulting firm, has published its latest market intelligence report on the outdoor advertising market. The global outdoor advertising market size was valued at USD 43.3 Billion in 2025. Looking forward, IMARC Group estimates the market to reach USD 71.2 Billion by 2034, exhibiting a CAGR of 5.50% from 2026-2034, driven by rapid urbanization, the shift from static sites to digital out-of-home (DOOH) screens, the rise of programmatic buying, and the cost-effectiveness of outdoor media compared with television and print.
The outdoor advertising markets is gaining momentum as advertisers look for formats that reach audiences outside the home and cannot be skipped, blocked or scrolled past. Outdoor media is also one of the few traditional channels still adding revenue. In the United States, ad spend on the channel is estimated at USD 4.0 Billion, up 4.1% year on year, while radio, print and linear TV are expected to decline by around 3.5%. Digital screens now account for about 20% of US outdoor spend, up from 7% less than a decade ago, and drove 55% of the channel's recent revenue growth. Record results from global operators show that demand for high-impact, location-based advertising is strong.
How AI is Reshaping the Future of the Outdoor Advertising Market
- Programmatic DOOH and Automated Buying: AI-driven demand-side and supply-side platforms are letting advertisers buy digital screens the way they buy online ads, with real-time bidding, audience data and automated scheduling. JCDecaux's programmatic DOOH revenue rose 30.9% organically to EUR 102.8 Million, equal to 12.3% of its digital revenue. Its Viooh supply-side platform now runs in 46 countries and connects to 50 demand-side platforms and 49 external DOOH operators, giving brands access to screens across multiple countries from a single interface.
- Dynamic Creative and Contextual Targeting: Machine learning lets digital billboards change creative automatically based on time of day, weather, traffic, local events and footfall. A coffee chain can promote iced drinks on hot afternoons, and a retailer can push offers when a store is nearby. This raises relevance and campaign return on investment, and it is a key reason digital formats are growing several times faster than classic sites.
- Audience Measurement and Campaign Attribution: Computer vision, mobile location data and anonymized footfall analytics are replacing rough traffic-count estimates with verified impression data. Advertisers can link a screen exposure to store visits, app downloads or online searches, which supports bigger budgets from performance-focused brands and helps outdoor compete with digital channels for marketing spend.

Outdoor Advertising Market Trends and Drivers:
The global outdoor advertising market is expanding steadily as digitization, urban growth and measurable returns combine to make outdoor media a core part of media plans. The most visible shift is the move from paper and vinyl to digital screens. JCDecaux generated 42.8% of its revenue from digital in the first half of the year, with digital revenue up 14.5% organically, while its classic billboard segment grew only 0.8% and its street furniture segment grew 7.3%. The same pattern shows in Germany, where Ströer reported a 24.3% rise in digital out-of-home revenue in the second quarter while classic out-of-home slipped 1.3%. In the United States, Lamar Advertising reported net revenue of USD 617 Million in the second quarter, up 6.5%, its fastest growth rate in four years, with digital revenue up 15%. OUTFRONT Media reported transit revenue up 22% and billboard revenue up 7% in the same period.
Major events and infrastructure are also creating new demand. The FIFA World Cup lifted North American revenue at JCDecaux by 19.6% organically and supported the UK at 12.8% and the rest of Europe at 7.8%. Transport networks are a growing source of new inventory. In March, JCDecaux secured a 10-year advertising contract at Denver International Airport and was reappointed for up to 14 years as exclusive partner for Melbourne's Yarra Trams, and in January it won a 10-year exclusive contract with Luxembourg's CFL railway. Asia remains the largest regional market, where fast-growing cities, metro expansion and large urban populations keep street-level advertising valuable. Even so, JCDecaux's Asia Pacific revenue grew only 2.3%, with China at low single digits, which shows how much of the growth is now coming from digital and programmatic formats rather than volume.
Government policy is shaping where and how outdoor advertising can grow. After the Ghatkopar billboard collapse in Mumbai killed 17 people and injured more than 80, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation introduced stricter advertising guidelines in November 2025. These cap hoarding size at 40 ft by 40 ft, ban ads on footpaths and building terraces, require a structural engineer's report for hoardings above 300 sq ft, require permit renewal every two years, and limit LED brightness to a 3:1 luminance ratio, with digital and LED ads restricted to controlled areas such as malls, multiplexes and petrol pumps. In France, illuminated outdoor advertising must be switched off between 1am and 6am under Article R581-35 of the Environment Code, and non-compliance can lead to fines of EUR 1,500 to EUR 7,500, which pushes operators toward energy-efficient screens and smart scheduling. In Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Municipality and Housing has issued updated billboard regulations in line with Vision 2030, covering safety, appearance and license expiry, to reduce visual clutter and support private-sector investment. In the United States, billboards along federal-aid highways remain governed by the Highway Beautification Act, with states setting digital display rules. Together, these measures raise compliance standards, favor well-capitalized operators and encourage the switch to safer, more controllable digital formats.
Sustainability and technology are the final drivers. Operators are adopting energy-efficient LED lighting, recyclable materials and solar-powered billboards, while augmented reality and interactive displays are turning sites into brand experiences. In April 2024, Redken launched a 3D Times Square billboard with an AR virtual try-on, a good example of how outdoor creative is moving beyond static images. Challenges remain. Geopolitical conflict in the Middle East, which made up about 5% of JCDecaux revenue, held back its transport segment in the region and reduced its rest-of-world growth to 3.0%, compared with 18.3% excluding Middle East effects. Strict local regulation and high compliance costs also affect smaller operators.

Outdoor Advertising Industry Segmentation:
The report has segmented the market into the following categories:
Breakup By Type:
- Traditional Outdoor Advertising
- Digital Outdoor Advertising
Traditional outdoor advertising accounts for the largest type segment at about 51.67% of the market. Static billboards, transit advertising, posters and street furniture remain the backbone of the industry, offering broad, round-the-clock visibility at a low cost per impression and a long-established base of sites and contracts. Digital outdoor advertising is the faster-growing part of the market, supported by programmatic buying, real-time content and interactive displays that let advertisers run flexible, data-driven campaigns.
Breakup By Segment:
- Billboard Advertising
- Transport Advertising
- Street Furniture Advertising
- Others
Billboard advertising holds the largest segment share at about 56.7%, driven by its high visibility along highways and in city centers, its suitability for large-format creative, and the steady conversion of classic sites to digital screens. Transport advertising across airports, metro systems, railways and buses is gaining ground as passenger traffic and station redevelopment create premium, high-dwell-time audiences, while street furniture is benefiting from city contracts for bus shelters and digital panels.
Breakup By Region:
- Asia (China, Japan, India, South Korea)
- Australasia
- Europe
- Latin America
- Middle East and Africa
Asia dominates the global outdoor advertising market with a share of over 34.5%, driven by rapid urbanization, dense metropolitan populations, expanding metro and airport networks, and strong spending by consumer, retail and e-commerce brands. In India, large-scale campaigns such as the multi-state, 15-city rollout for a leading pen brand in September 2024 show how national advertisers are using outdoor media to reach consumers across many markets at once. Europe is the home of the largest operators and is leading the move to digital street furniture and programmatic buying, while the Middle East is attracting investment through large infrastructure and city-development programs.
