Investing Advice for 20-Somethings?

A recent Reddit discussion asking for the single most important piece of investing or personal finance advice for someone in their 20s points toward one especially consequential answer: begin building wealth early, even when the amounts initially seem insignificant.

Young adults face competing financial priorities, including student loans, rent, transportation costs and entry-level salaries. Nevertheless, delaying saving and investing can sacrifice one advantage that cannot be recovered later: time. Regular contributions made in a person's 20s have decades to earn returns, compound and generate additional growth. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's Investor.gov resource emphasizes that the earlier someone begins investing, the more powerful compounding becomes over an extended period.

Smart Asset's 2025 study of household net worth provides additional context. The analysis found that the median American household had an estimated net worth of $187,690, but wealth varied substantially by state and by asset ownership. Nationwide, approximately 60% of households held tax-advantaged retirement accounts, while median retirement balances differed sharply across locations. The findings demonstrate that wealth is generally accumulated through a combination of retirement savings, cash reserves, home equity and other investments rather than through one dramatic financial decision.

Federal Reserve research also found that families headed by someone younger than 35 remained the country's least wealthy age group in 2022, despite experiencing substantial net-worth growth since 2019. That reflects the reality that wealth accumulation typically occurs gradually as earnings rise, debts decline and investments compound.

The most useful advice for someone in their 20s may therefore be to automate a sustainable savings and investment habit as early as possible. The initial contribution matters less than establishing a system that can continue—and expand—for decades.
