Brown matter: Plants and trees are green, but the compost that helps them grow must be brown. Brown is necessary because it is high in carbon and includes straw. So think about adding branches collected during pruning, saw dust, or wood shavings from untreated wood, needles, leaves, old plants, and everything that tell you, “I am brown”.
Green matter: Once the brown matter is sorted, it is time to layer some greens over it. It is not supposed to be tricky; you can add anything from the leftover salads, vegetable peels, fruit peels, green plant clippings, weeds without seed heads, natural droppings and so on. If you are using animal manure, remember that a few things can be very high in nitrogen and thus, be sure that the manure is rotted and properly added into the compost pile.
